A tweak here, some solder there, pretty soon you'll forget you were building a speaker system. As you learn, you'll recognize where improvements are needed in the test system.
Actually, most any mic of sufficient bandwidth will do for casual use, as long as the response is known and predictable so you can correct for nonlinearities.Īll hardware links to the test item must meet your minimum requirements, and also calibrated or otherwise corrected to present linear, accurate data to the software.īe warned! Once you're into it, the measurement process itself can be as intrigueing and challenging as the project you're using it for. Some cards have external I/O bays, and there are a few with balanced, powered I/O, or you can improvise. They won't plug-and-play with an 1/8" mini. Most measurement-rated mics are balanced, lo-Z, and need phantom power. Don't know, but USB 2.0 or firewire might work OK.
My personal experience with USB cards is bad, the added latency screws up time domains. Consider future needs or expansion, especially on connectivity, or (like me) you'll buy more than one. Here's where a little green goes a long way, as hipo souncards are fairly cheap (compared to a lot of the software). Some cards with advertised rates of 24bit/96kHz still only duplex at the lower rate, so check the duplex rate.

Unless you're buying a package with both software and hardware, your soundcard must be full duplex at a (recommended) minimum of 16 bits/48kHz. snip.more information (regarding microphones etc.) when things has been installed/downloaded etc. Obviously you don't need all this software, but try it all and see what works well for you. I've demoed them, but haven't used them a lot. In addition, check out Mac the Scope and Waavebox.

The good news: it is OS X and the download is now free. It'll create nine different types of waves.Ĥ.) I also still use AudioXplorer, a now discontinued piece of RTA software. The developer seems a little pissy with Apple's switch to Intel, though.ģ.) A useful companion testing tool is AudioTest:

There's some other cool stuff there for Mac musicians.Ģ.) If you want a cheap sonogram, try FFTea: I have a few other weapons in my Mac arsenal, as well.ġ.) For a simple software oscilloscope, try WaveWindow: I think I've mentioned it a few times in older threads. Looks good so far, but is there anybody who have tried it out or works with this software ? Now, I have found this when surfing the internet: The problem (for me) is that am working on Mac computers and Smaart are design only for the PC/Windows system. Stay tuned, and go download FuzzMeasure 3.2.5 now!.Thank you pell圓s and all the others for the informs. I hope to have more to share soon regarding FuzzMeasure. In addition to the above fix, I managed to get the FuzzMeasure application bundle signed using my Developer ID, which makes downloading the application on newer Macs go much more smoothly. For instance, a subwoofer with adequate recording level would result in an impulse response with a very small magnitude.
In reality, it was too often filtering out impulses that had legitimate reasons for being "too quiet". When I first implemented this check, it made perfect sense because it was working to ensure adequate SNR in the impulse response. When checking for an adequate recording level, FuzzMeasure will now analyze the recorded audio, and not the calculated impulse response. So today's release includes a little fix that actually makes a big difference to FuzzMeasure's operation. Fortunately for my users, that's not true for all the fixes!

Many of those bug fixes required large engineering efforts that cannot be integrated into the FuzzMeasure 3.2 code base. Few people like to wait, no matter how much greater the reward will be.ĭuring all this development, I have identified and corrected some issues in the code that I'm unhappy with. Unfortunately for my users, that just means more waiting. I certainly bit off more than I could chew with this one, so it's going to be a little while still. The work has been slow, but I assure you that significant progress has been made.
FUZZMEASURE FREE ALTERNATIVE UPDATE
I have been working on a major update to FuzzMeasure for quite some time now. To the outside world, it might seem like I've not done a thing with the product in years! Fortunately for my users, that is certainly not the case. It's been too long since I've spoken about FuzzMeasure.
